Frequently Asked Questions

General IMAT Info

What exactly is the IMAT Exam?
The IMAT (International Medical Admissions Test) is the official, paper-based entrance exam required for students applying to English-taught Medicine and Surgery degree programs at public universities in Italy.

It is held annually, typically in September or October. Previously administered by Cambridge Assessment, it is now directly and exclusively managed by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR). This shift means the exam is now highly similar to the Italian-language medical exam (TOLC-MED), rigorously testing pure scientific knowledge (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math) rather than abstract logical puzzles.
Why is studying medicine in Italy considered such a great opportunity?
Italy offers one of the most unique opportunities in global medical education: world-class, 6-year English-taught medical programs at prestigious public universities with incredibly affordable tuition.

Unlike the US or UK where medical school can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, Italian public universities calculate tuition based on your family income (ISEE indicator), scaling from as low as €156 to around €3,000 per year. Furthermore, the degree is fully recognized across the EU, the UK, and the USA. The IMAT is the single academic hurdle standing between you and this life-changing path.
Who is eligible to take the IMAT exam?
The IMAT exam is open to both EU and Non-EU candidates. The primary requirement is that you must have completed your secondary education, which typically requires demonstrating 12 years of formal schooling. If your country's educational system only provides 11 years (e.g., Russia, parts of South America), you must complete one year of university or a foundation year to be eligible.
How much is the registration fee, and are there scholarships available?
The IMAT registration fee is globally fixed at approximately €130 (or its equivalent in GBP/USD), payable online via the Universitaly portal during the summer registration window.

Regarding scholarships, Italy offers massive regional grants known as DSU (Diritto allo Studio Universitario). Based entirely on your family's financial situation (ISEE), these scholarships can completely cover your tuition, provide free daily meals, and grant a yearly cash stipend of up to €7,000 to assist with rent and living expenses.
Which Italian universities offer Medicine or Dentistry in English?
The list of public universities offering Medicine in English is constantly expanding. Currently, it includes top-tier institutions such as the University of Pavia, Bologna, Turin, Milan, Bari, Rome Tor Vergata, Rome Sapienza, Padua, Parma, Naples Federico II, Campania Luigi Vanvitelli, Messina, and Siena.

For Dentistry in English, the programs are currently available at Sapienza University of Rome and the University of Siena.

Exam Structure & Scoring

What subjects are covered in the IMAT syllabus?
The IMAT tests candidates across 5 core scientific and cognitive domains: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and General Knowledge / Logical Reasoning.

The MUR syllabus is extremely specific, heavily emphasizing advanced high-school level Biology (cell biology, genetics, human anatomy) and Chemistry (stoichiometry, organic chemistry). Meditaliano’s Science Hub is meticulously structured to cover all these topics exactly as per the latest MUR guidelines.
How many questions are there, and what is the exact format?
The exam consists of 60 multiple-choice questions, each offering 5 possible options where only one is correct.

The current distribution is: Logical Reasoning & General Knowledge (9 questions), Biology (23 questions), Chemistry (18 questions), and Physics & Mathematics (13 questions). This heavy weighting towards Bio/Chem means prioritizing these subjects is the key to a high score.
What is the scoring system, and what is the minimum passing score?
The maximum possible score is 90 points. The scoring formula is strict to discourage blind guessing:
• Correct answer: +1.5 points
• Incorrect answer: -0.4 points
• Unanswered question: 0 points

There is no fixed 'passing score'. Admission is purely rank-based, depending entirely on how well you perform compared to other candidates applying to your chosen university and the specific number of seats available that year.
Does the exam have a time limit?
Yes, the IMAT is an intense sprint. You are given exactly 100 minutes to complete all 60 questions. This leaves you with roughly 1.6 minutes per question. Time management, skipping overly complex math problems, and utilizing quick active recall for biology are crucial strategies taught in our course.
What items am I allowed to bring into the exam room?
Security is incredibly strict. You must bring your original Passport or National ID used during registration, a printed copy of your Universitaly registration receipt, and a transparent water bottle without any labels.

Calculators, smartwatches, phones, earplugs, scratch paper, and even your own pens are strictly prohibited. The test center will provide a specific black pen that you must use.

Preparation & Resources

What are the absolute best resources to prepare for the MUR IMAT?
Using outdated textbooks designed for the old Cambridge IMAT format is a massive risk. The exam has changed.

Meditaliano provides a fully digital, 360-degree ecosystem specifically tailored to the MUR format. This includes our Science Hub (HD video lectures), AI-powered Mock Simulators, and a massive 6000+ Question Bank that tracks your performance data and adapts to highlight your weakest topics.
How far in advance should I start preparing?
While some exceptional students pass with 2 months of intense study, we strongly recommend starting your preparation at least 4 to 6 months before the exam.

The IMAT is an exam of massive volume, not just difficulty. Consistency, spaced repetition, and active recall over a longer period are statistically far more successful than stressful last-minute cramming.
Which past papers are the most important to focus on?
You should eventually practice all IMAT past papers from 2011 to the present. However, you must prioritize the 2020 to 2024 papers.

More importantly, you must practice translated TOLC-MED and Italian veterinary entrance exam questions, as these are authored by the MUR and perfectly reflect the exact style, phrasing, and difficulty level of the modern IMAT.
How many full mock exams should I take before the real test?
You should aim to complete at least 8 to 10 full-length mock exams under strict 100-minute timed conditions without any distractions.

Taking the mock is only 30% of the work. The remaining 70% is reviewing your mistakes meticulously. Our AI Mock platform automatically breaks down your errors by sub-topic so you know exactly which video lecture to re-watch.
Is the Meditaliano course the right fit for my specific background?
Absolutely. Whether you are a high school student starting entirely from zero, a university graduate, or someone who failed previous attempts and is aiming for a top 1% score, our platform adapts to you.

We provide a highly structured, data-driven 200-Day Study Roadmap designed by Top 0.5% IMAT scorers, removing all guesswork from your daily routine.

Application & Enrollment

How many universities can I apply to on Universitaly?
This is a critical distinction based on your passport:
EU Candidates: Can rank all available public universities in order of preference. If you don't get your first choice, you slide down to the next.
Non-EU Candidates: Can choose ONLY ONE public university. You cannot have a second choice. If you don't make the cut for that specific university, you cannot enroll anywhere else. Therefore, a strategic choice based on your consistent mock exam scores is vital.
Who exactly is categorized as an EU candidate?
The 'EU candidate' category includes citizens of the EU, EEA countries (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein), Switzerland, and San Marino.

Crucially, Non-EU nationals who hold a valid, long-term legal residence permit (Permesso di Soggiorno) in Italy are also legally treated as EU candidates for the IMAT, giving them the immense advantage of ranking all universities.
What is the Pre-enrollment process and why is it so important?
Pre-enrollment is a mandatory bureaucratic step exclusively for Non-EU students residing outside of Italy. It is done via the Universitaly portal, usually between May and July.

It serves two vital purposes: 1) It allows the Italian university to verify your high school qualifications remotely, and 2) Once validated, it acts as the official green light for the Italian Embassy in your country to begin processing your Type D Study Visa.
How and when do I actually register for the IMAT exam?
IMAT registration occurs during a strict, narrow window in the summer (usually July).

You must log into Universitaly, navigate to the IMAT section, select your physical test center (you can take it in Italy or at various authorized centers worldwide), choose your university preferences, and immediately pay the €130 fee. Missing this window by even one minute disqualifies you for the year.
Do I need my actual High School Diploma to register?
To sit the exam, you can be in your final year of high school. However, to formally enroll in the university after passing, you must possess an official diploma proving you have completed a minimum of 12 years of formal schooling that meets the standards set by the Italian Ministry of Education.

Documents & Visas

When exactly should I apply for my Italian student visa?
You must apply for your Type D study visa immediately after your pre-enrollment application is validated by your chosen university on the Universitaly portal.

Do not, under any circumstances, wait for the IMAT exam to happen or for your results to be published. Embassies in non-EU countries are notoriously slow, and waiting will guarantee you miss the final enrollment deadline.
What is a DOV (Declaration of Value)?
A DOV (Dichiarazione di Valore) is an official legal document issued solely by the Italian consular authority in the country where you graduated high school.

It certifies that your foreign high school diploma is authentic, legally valid, and fulfills the 12-year requirement for admission into the Italian higher education system.
What is CIMEA, and how is it different from the DOV?
CIMEA is an Italian credential evaluation agency that issues a digital Statement of Comparability online.

Because securing a DOV via embassies can take months of frustrating bureaucracy, many Italian universities now accept or even prefer the CIMEA certificate. It is much faster, completely digital, and saves students from dealing with consular delays.
Do I need to submit an English proficiency certificate like IELTS or TOEFL?
For the IMAT exam itself, an English certificate is not required. The exam is considered proof enough.

However, when you pass and go to the university secretary for final enrollment, some universities strictly require a B2-level English certificate (IELTS, Cambridge, TOEFL) if you are not from a native English-speaking country. Always check your specific university's 'Bando' (call for admission).
What happens if I miss a bureaucratic or visa deadline?
Italian bureaucracy is entirely unforgiving. Deadlines are absolute laws, not suggestions.

Missing a registration window, a pre-enrollment deadline, a fee payment, or failing to secure your visa in time means you will permanently lose your chance to study medicine for that entire academic year, regardless of how high your IMAT score is.

Meditaliano Courses & Payments

What happens if the MUR suddenly changes the test format or syllabus?
The Italian Ministry can be unpredictable. If the MUR alters the test structure, syllabus, or scoring logic, Meditaliano will instantly mobilize our academic team to update all video modules, study materials, and mock exams.

Every enrolled student will receive these critical updates pushed to their dashboard at absolutely no additional cost. We guarantee you will always study the right material.
What specific payment methods are accepted on your platform?
We utilize Stripe and PayPal to process payments globally with bank-level security. We accept all major Credit and Debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover), PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and direct SEPA Bank Transfers.

Additionally, our system automatically applies Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) discounts for students applying from lower-income countries to keep our courses accessible to everyone.
Can I use Italian government educational bonuses (like Carta Cultura or 18app)?
Because our primary payment gateway is international, direct automated checkouts using Italian government cards (Carta Cultura Giovani, Carta del Merito) are not natively supported on the checkout page.

However, we do accept them! Please contact our WhatsApp Support Team, and we will manually generate a specific payment link or voucher code to process your government bonus.
I already own physical textbooks from other IMAT academies. Can I deduct them from your course price?
Meditaliano is fundamentally different from traditional academies. We are a 100% digital, continuously updated ecosystem.

Because the IMAT changes rapidly, static physical books become outdated instantly. Therefore, there are no physical books to 'exclude' from our packages; all our advanced, interactive learning materials are integrated online, so the price reflects the digital platform access, not shipping paper.
If I start with a cheaper plan, can I upgrade later? Will I lose the money I already paid?
Upgrading is seamless and risk-free! If you purchase the Premium plan and later decide you want the advanced analytics or tutoring included in the Super, Pro, or Ultra plans, the exact amount you previously paid will be fully credited and deducted from the price of the higher tier. You only pay the exact difference.
How exactly do I access the course content, and how long does it take?
As a 100% digital academy, there is absolutely zero waiting time for international shipping.

The moment your payment is confirmed, the Science Hub, all Video-on-Demand lectures, the Q-Bank, and the AI Simulators are unlocked instantly, 24/7, directly on your personalized dashboard. You can begin studying within 60 seconds of enrollment.
